William Pike

A few days ago William Pike came to visit our class for the second time. He Was climbing Mt Ruapehu about 10 years ago. It erupted while he was there, causing 60 olympic sized swimming pools worth of rock and debris to come crashing down onto the mountain. Unfortunately he and his friend were sleeping in that hut at the same time. Their hut basically got demolished by the rock and a rock landed on William's leg crushing it.

He had to get his right leg amputated. If he didn't get it amputated he would have died. But he survived! That hasn't stopped him living life to the fullest and he still want to climb to the top of the mountain. He hasn't succeeded yet but everytime he is getting further and further up. He has created the William Pike Challenge Award which our classes year seven and eights are involved in. I am excited to do this challenge and hopefully at high school we do something similar.

My Port Hills Haiku poem

This is my port hills day hike haiku poem.
It is a 17 syllable poem.
5 in the first line, 7 in the middle and 5 on the bottom.
This is my poem:

The port hills are cool.

The spring water is clear white

Then I got a fright

This was for our william pike challenge.
We were focusing on 3 of his values.
Pride, Resilience and Teamwork.
I think I did good in all of these.

Rock climbing tour

It was Monday the 20th of June when Rimu was destined to do rock climbing. At first for me it was hard. I strolled to school at 8:40am only to find that this was the day that we were going, and to find that I was the only person who was in school uniform and I wasn't packed. So I scrambled home and got myself sorted and packed and came back to school just before they left also known as 8:55. Only this time I was sorted and ready to go.

I was going with Miss Blair in her car along with Jesse, Gus and Jack. It was a talkative ride.
Once we had got to the top of summit road it was really misty and let’s just say, we were in the clouds! It was so cold and we were all thinking that it would be like this all day. But almost as soon as we started walking the cloud lifted and it was sunny! There was a very rocky track leading to where we were going. Steven one of our instructors showed us where we would be abseiling and Josh (the other instructor) showed us where we were climbing.

It was abseiling time and me and 4 others went. It looked cool and safe for everyone but me. And I was right in a way. Jo came down really good and he was followed by Isaac and he was followed by Zach. They all went down like it was easy! Now It was my time to shine. I slowly went down... when I slipped and smacked my head, legs and shoulder. It hurt so bad!  I gave up and went to rock climbing. I had one turn at this and went just less than halfway. Let’s just say that I hate heights!

Now it was time to go home and we took the track back to the cars. It seemed a lot shorter to get back. We were focusing on these values: Pride and Resilience and I think I did good on both of those, because I tried again after my big knock/fall.

But in the end I thought it was fun even though it was for school!

I'm Giving Jesse Enthosiasm

I am encouraging jesse to stay on his board and to go as fast as he can for as long as he can.
I am on the surf board next to jesse (the red one) saying ' go Jesse go'

All and all this was one of the best days of my 11 year old life and I was the first on the board and standing so I was the 'super-star' of the day.

I actually learnt to surf!

William Pike Challenge Award

On Tuesday the 16th of March we were cooking for the William PIke Challenge Award. I had a good crew of Isaac Tim and me (and my mum). We made sushi with salmon and carrot in it and served it with soy sauce (my favorite) ginger and wasabi. The rest of the class got to make what they wanted to make.

This is what happened: We prepared our sushi for the big night ahead. When that was done we put it in the fridge. 3 hours later I took it out. tim said 'wow that looks good yum'. And it was. When we brought it out to william he thought it was from a shop. And he gave it 11 stars out of 10, which we thought was good.

In the end we went to the wharehui to make a start to the william pike challenge. He showed us an interesting video / slideshow that was telling us about what happened to his leg and encouraged us to do think that we want to do and never give up.
