Final Blog Post, Highlights of the Year

It has been 1 year already! only 1 day to go till the end of term. I have had lots of good times with this class. It is sad this year because Miss Blair is leaving, so then she can't be my teacher next year which is sad.

Highlights of the year.

The best part of this year would have to be Arthur's Pass camp. It was a good camp with walks that was fun, at least I thought they were good. The FOOD was good because it was mostly unhealthy food. Good for me and most of the boys. I have a few photos for this.

Have a good year and stay safe in the school holidays!

YMS Twilight Market

On October the 29th Yaldhurst School had there first market. This market was called the 'twilight' market because it was held in the evening. I had a St John come down with me and I showed people in and out of the ambulance. I also handed out stickers and lollipops with my friend Paris who is also from St John. As you may have figured out by now I do St John cadets. Later in the evening we got this wheelchair thing out and I took people for rides with it. Overall I thing that it was a good evening and I would do it again anytime.

Prototec

For the past 6 weeks this term, Rimu class has been using the Prototec maths site to practice our basic facts and times tables and more!  Prototec records how you are going at maths and your scores are out of 40. Prototec is a maths site that teaches you maths and you can work at  your own level / stage so it is not too hard or to easy for you. You can either have a timed test or a sheet that is not timed. And you learn heaps also it really tests your brain. The link for the site is here.

This is my calender art for this term.
As you can see it is of my favorite place in the world.
The Pelorus Sounds
It is of all of the things we do.
The boat means boating and fishing.
The canoe means going canoeing in the harbor.
The fire means a bonfire.
The tree means trees all round us.
Thanks for viewing.

My Easttle Writing for this term

The Easttle writing test is my favorite writing test of the term. This term I wrote about my trip to the Pelorus Sounds at the start of the year. I usually struggle with the time limit of 40 minutes but I think I did well.  I hope you like my writing.

Pelorus sounds fishing trip

In February my family and I went to the Pelorus Sounds. On the way there, because the water was so calm, I got to drive the family boat. It was fun having to dodge all of the logs that were in the water. But it was easy because all I had to do was follow Cam’s boat ( my uncle).  It is boat only access going to the bach. When we got to the bach well known as the ‘woolshed’ we unpacked and got ready to go fishing. The bach has 14 beds and 5 of which are either double or king sized beds. After we unpacked we went fishing and caught around 7 blue cod and had a good feed for the first night.

The next day I got my canoe out and had a few races with Richie and my cousin. I won because I have the only racing canoe. When I got back to shore I was greeted by my dad and then got my canoe flipped into the water while I was still in the canoe. The water wasn’t cold but it was fresh, really fresh. I went back to the shed and got the dinghy out and rowed the dinghy to the wharf and went fishing with Brodie and bailey (my cousin). We caught 2 fish. One was a spotty and the other was a blue cod, too small to keep.

Later on that day we went fishing again and went ‘drift fishing’ for gurnard. From what I can remember we caught 3. But it was fun. Then it was dark and we ‘smoked’ some blue cod and had another good feed.

In the morning my cousin got out his b.b gun and we shot a possum and shot a few birds and eagleray. Then it was time to pack up again and go home. It felt like a long time heading back, but we got back and that is the good thing. Overall it was a good weekend and I would be happy to do that again anytime!

100 Word Challenge

This is my 100 Work Challenge for this week. I hope you like it.

Airplanes are cool. They are fast and loud. They fly really high and can fly for long periods of time. But they are pretty hard to fly and it takes time to practice how to fly one. Sometimes they crash and burn like one time, the RV4 that I went in crashed and as the smoke cleared it revealed that the wing had collapsed and had been held on just by a few metal wires. But it still flys to this day and if you look it up it says that it is the most accident prone RV4 in New Zealand.

Bush Surival Skills Kahoot

This is my kahoot on Bush Survival skills. I worked with Tim and Shukoor. Bush survival was our 4th william pike challenge. It was fun making this kahoot but we found out quickly that we didn't know any questions. So we spent about 3 hours just thinking of questions to put in this kahoot. But in the end we made this pretty cool. At least I think. I hope you enjoy our video.

Canta Maths exhibit

This is my CantaMaths exhibit. I worked with Jack, Shukoor and Tim. What we found challenging was keeping the ring standing up. But we found a solution thanks to tim and rocks. We found that it is hard to design a wrestling ring. We found it easy to work together nicely. Unfortunately we didn't get a placing, but it was fun making it with friends.

Whitebaiting

Last weekend I went whitebaiting with my family.
We caught approximately 9 pounds of whitebait.
The pushes where big and they gave us good whitebait.
But we missed a big sholl of a massive 16 POUNDS of whitebait go by.
Image result for lots of whitebait in bucketImage result for lots of whitebait in bucket
Overall It was a good weekend and I will do it again anytime.

My speech

The class focus for the past 2 weeks has been our speeches. This is my speech and a padlet saying what I am saying. What I found challenging was the time it took to make my speech and the time that it took to practice ( I practiced only once). I thought that I did good at pronouncing the words. But I didn't get hard words in my speech. I hope that you like my speech.

1 Act Of Kindness

This is my Digi Awards for this year. I was working with Jayden and Zac. We did a Minecraft world. Unfortunately we did not get placed and we know why. We rushed it and the camera angles were poor. But other than that; it was good and fun making it

Quality Blog Commenting

Here is some tips to have a quality blog comment.

1. Write something positive for exampleCongratulations on learning your new skill of stitching.

2. Add new information, for example I last used stitching when I made a sheet with everyone in my family's name on it.

3. Ask a question or 2, for example What continents to the olympic rings represent?

They are the things you need to do to have a quality blog comment.

Helen Taylor - Illustrator!

Rimu class was lucky enough to have an Author/ Illustrator (Helen Taylor) to come in and teach us how to make books and she also wanted us to do some drawing and this is my duck or is it a pukeko?
I think that she could of been more better at explaining by not taking very long breaks in between sentences and to be more 'child friendly'.

100 Word Challenge

For the 100 Word Challenge this week I learnt how to use personification which is a powerful form of a metaphor. We had to write a few sentences with them in it. I hope you like my one!

The fireflies shone the way to my house. They are yellow with a tinge of gold. The trees swayed in the wind like little brothers having fights. The wind was gashing my flesh, it felt like bees stinging me.
The ground was as soft as a pillow. The sky was the same colour as hazelnut crunch. The trees in the distance waited for my arrival. I was walking through paradise.
I heard the water in the creek falling down the waterfall

The fireflies said goodbye as I walked on.

Term 3 Timetable

Welcome to term 3!
This is my term time table. It has been made by Mrs.Blair so it should be good every week.
If a box is coloured green then it means that I have done all of my work. Orange means that I could have done better And red means that I have hardly done anything at all.

My Port Hills Haiku poem

This is my port hills day hike haiku poem.
It is a 17 syllable poem.

This is my poem:

The port hills are cool.

The spring water is clear white

Then I got a fright

This was for our william pike challenge.
We were focusing on 3 of his values.
Pride, Resilience and Teamwork.
I think I did good in all of these.

Half way through the year!

This is my half-way-through-the-year reflection prezi. It shows all of my strengths and weaknesses throughout term 1 and 2. I hope that you like it and please give feedback.                                                                                         ENJOY!

Rock climbing tour

It was Monday the 20th of June when Rimu was destined to do rock climbing. At first for me it was hard. I strolled to school at 8:40am only to find that this was the day that we were going, and to find that I was the only person who was in school uniform and I wasn't packed. So I scrambled home and got myself sorted and packed and came back to school just before they left also known as 8:55. Only this time I was sorted and ready to go.

JPEG Image

I was going with Miss Blair in her car along with Jesse, Gus and Jack. It was a talkative ride.
Once we had got to the top of summit road it was really misty and let’s just say, we were in the clouds! It was so cold and we were all thinking that it would be like this all day. But almost as soon as we started walking the cloud lifted and it was sunny! There was a very rocky track leading to where we were going. Steven one of our instructors showed us where we would be abseiling and Josh (the other instructor) showed us where we were climbing.

It was abseiling time and me and 4 others went. It looked cool and safe for everyone but me. And I was right in a way. Jo came down really good and he was followed by Isaac and he was followed by Zach. They all went down like it was easy! Now It was my time to shine. I slowly went down... when I slipped and smacked my head, legs and shoulder. It hurt so bad!  I gave up and went to rock climbing. I had one turn at this and went just less than halfway. Let’s just say that I hate heights!

JPEG Image
JPEG ImageThe day went better from there. I just kept exploring the place. Joe showed me this weird hut under the rock, and I almost overcame my fear. But to this day I still haven’t. Now it was time to go home and we took the track back to the cars. It seemed a lot shorter to get back. We were focusing on these values: Pride and Resilience and I think I did good on both of those, because I tried again after my big knock/fall.

But in the end I thought it was fun even though it was for school!

!00 Word Challenge

The Violin Girl

One day there was a girl who loved playing the  English violin. But she was now faced with one of her worst fears... Being on a Yellow airplane. She feared that it would crash and she would be sweat away in the sea. But she had to go to the national violin comps. And she had to fly from Christchurch New Zealand to Melbourne Australia. Before she went on the plane she had eaten and she was starting to feel sleepy. She soon felt sick and vomited all over the plane’s toilet.
She didn’t feel well for the rest of the trip...

                                     To Be Continued...

KAPAHAKA

This is Rimu and Kauri class doing kapahaka. I think that our classes sound kinda like a choir. I forgot what this song is called but I will update it when I know. I like doing it because you can use your voice properly and it's a good way to express yourself, especially when you're feeling angry!

Playground assistants plan for term 2

JPEG ImageThis is what the playground assistants are going to do this term. We are trying to get out to every lunch break, we can do it. This is our plan roughly:

What are we going to do this term?

1.Helping the duty teachers keep an eye on kids to make sure they’re eating their lunches.

2. Take them to Lynda if they need a plaster during break etc.

3. Make sure we stick to our timetable without skipping it.

4. Give HERO cards to people who are doing the right thing.

5. We are going to walk around at breaks to make sure that no-one is throwing sticks, or doing things they’re not meant to do etc.
……………………………………………………………………………………...

How are we going to achieve this?

  1. Stick to our timetable, e.g. No Skipping.
  2. We are going to remind each other.
  3. Remember what days we are on.
  4. Don’t be a quitter and do your job properly.

…The flame flickered and then went out…

One day I went exploring in a New Zealand cave in search of the native bats that live there. I brought a torch (Wooden torch) and a few matches with me so if my torch went out I had a last minute light if need be. Now I am 47 feet underground and it is starting to get cold. This is when I thought of my last minute resort. It was fire so I decided to use it. I had to use all my matches to light it so if it went out. I had it going for one minute then it happened. The flame flickered and then went out...

This term our school value  is enthusiastic  learners. This term we are sticking to our own timetables. And this means that we will become good at  self -managing  and getting through our goals. 100WC The stairway to the sky

This is a story about the stairway to the sky. At the bottom of the stairs there is a wonderful garden with all of our modern animals. These animals will guide you through this wonderful maze of stairs. As you get higher you can see the top of the clouds. Then you can see the Earths atmosphere. All of the air down there yet none up here and you are still breathing. How strange I thought that you can’t breathe in space. But I could. Still it was fun. I finally landed on the moon. The view was amazing...

True false story ( Day One)

Holidays

In the holidays I went camping. And this wasn't any old camp it was a camp in the mountains! The track was a grade 4, four wheel drive track. Let’s say five is the hardest and one is the easiest. It was bouncy and rocky and all of the trucks just kept sliding over the rocks. It was a hard time but fun.

When we got to our camping area it started pouring down with rain. And the worst part of that was we had to 1: start a fire, 2: set 3 tents ,3 get all our luggage out of the trucks and get air beds ready, and 4: cook dinner. I was named the chef for the weekend, no offence but ‘I am the best with barbecues’. I cooked sausages for dinner and we had marshmallows on sticks over the fire later on. There were no toilets because we were in an 3227 acre farm with no one but 3 families on it. Oh and there was also cows and sheep near us but to far away to hear. Luckily my uncle brought a chemical toilet. At-least we didn't have to go in the bushes to go to the toilet. Two bad things about it was the chemicals was poo colored ( it looked like it was reusing the waste) and two it smelt so bad.

Cybersmart: top ten ways to look after a chromebook

This is Gus and my top ten ways to look after a chromebook.
It is about how to look after a school Chromebook and successfully look after it not only at school but in everyday life. The whole class made short videos explaining on what to do to look after a chromebook and a few how to's. You can see other videos on other student bogs in rimu.
Hope you like our video!

I'm Giving Jesse Enthosiasm

I am encouraging jesse to stay on his board and to go as fast as he can for as long as he can.
I am on the surf board next to jesse (the red one) saying ' go Jesse go'

All and all this was one of the best days of my 11 year old life and I was the first on the board and standing so I was the 'super-star' of the day.

I actually learnt to surf!

William Pike Challenge Award

On Tuesday the 16th of March we were cooking for the William PIke Challenge Award. I had a good crew of Isaac Tim and me (and my mum). We made sushi with salmon and carrot in it and served it with soy sauce (my favorite) ginger and wasabi. The rest of the class got to make what they wanted to make.

This is what happened: We prepared our sushi for the big night ahead. When that was done we put it in the fridge. 3 hours later I took it out. tim said 'wow that looks good yum'. And it was. When we brought it out to william he thought it was from a shop. And he gave it 11 stars out of 10, which we thought was good.

In the end we went to the wharehui to make a start to the william pike challenge. He showed us an interesting video / slideshow that was telling us about what happened to his leg and encouraged us to do think that we want to do and never give up.

Point of view 'Wonder work'

Wonder First person point of view
Our task for writing  last week was to make a quick essay about what point of view we thought it was. We also has to find examples for quotes that we found in the text. We had to have 3 paragraphs excluding introduction and conclusions.

‘Wonder’ is a story about a boy who feels ordinary on the inside, but he is always reminded of how different he is by how people respond when they see him. This is R.J Palacio’s first novel and it is written in the first person.

The story is in first person view because in the story he says “I know I’m Not An Ordinary 10 Year Old Boy.”

I think it’s in first person view because the story says “I can’t say I didn’t always want to go to school because that wouldn't be exactly true.”

I think it is in first person view because he says “I want to wear my boba fett costume”.

In conclusion R.J palacio Wrote this story in first person and made it very very interesting.

Cayde's Mihi Mihi

In the first two weeks of school, Rimu class learnt how to create and say our mihi in Māori. This is our introduction to our class and community. We also created a ‘visual mihimihi’ to match our mihis. It had three  parts to it:

  1. A self  portrait or photo
  2. place of significance
  3. Symbols or pictures that represent our culture

Those of us who spoke clearly, confidently with excellent pronunciation with  great visuals and layout scored well on our rubric.

Welcome back eveyone

It has been a long time since I have posted something! A lot has happened over the school holidays at school. The library has now been converted into our year 6,7 and 8 class!
